MPACE Members Offer Event to Generate Employer Interest

Several MPACE members recently hosted a successful MPACE event in Utah aimed at increasing employer awareness of our organization and the annual conference. Not only was the event a success, it could be replicated by MPACE members, like you, in other states or regions.
The event, a luncheon held at The Harvest Restaurant in Salt Lake City, was spearheaded by Brian Burton (University of Utah), Tom Munnerlyn (Cal Poly Pomona), Jodi Chowen (Brigham Young University) and Donna Crow (Utah State University), from the MPACE Conference Sponsorship Committee. The members of the committee recognized that there was an opportunity to increase employer awareness of MPACE in Utah.
The four began their planning by establishing a committee consisting of several MPACE university members from Utah. Each of their planning committee members then extended personal invitations to 3-4 of their employer contacts.
The organizers were pleased with the response. Twelve employers were represented at the luncheon (Mass Mutual, Golden West Credit Union, Vivint Solar, IM Flash, Market Star, England Logistics, Northwestern Mutual, InsideSales, Vivint, Enterprise, Sirsi Dynix, and 1-800 contacts), as well as 6 institutions (University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, Weber State University and Cal Poly Pomona).
During the luncheon, Donna Crow, Mt. North Regional Director for MPACE, provided an overview of MPACE and the benefits of membership. Next, Todd Russell, college recruiter from IM Flash, spoke about this first experience with MPACE at the San Francisco conference. He highlighted the networking opportunities and useful workshop content. To wrap up, Tom Munnerlyn offered a preview of the upcoming conference and described how MPACE creates networking opportunities for employers.
The event coordinators felt it was important to build long-term relationships and promote future MPACE participation. “All employers at the luncheon were from Utah,” Tom said. “Even if they can’t make it to Anaheim this December, we are hoping to see many of them at the Denver conference next year (since it’s a little closer to home for them).”
When asked how other MPACE members could implement a similar event, the planning committee said it’s important to first leverage the personal relationships Career Services professionals develop with a wide variety of employers. Each committee member should personally reach out to several employers they already have an established relationship with and invite them to attend. They found this more effective than sending a mass email to employers from a database. They suggested inviting employers who want to broaden their reach to universities in other MPACE regions, and are interested in learning how they can network with a large number of schools at MPACE regional events and the annual conference.
It is also important to make the event welcoming and accessible in terms of timing, location, etc. The event in Utah was held at a nice venue, and employers were invited to attend at no charge. These strategies contributed to the event’s success.

They were supportive of our idea to hold this event, and provided funding to make it possible. Thank you!”
