Throughout the past year, the undocumented student population has felt more scared and alienated than ever before. These students are consistently planning ahead for a future that seems ever-changing depending on their immigration and work status. Hear up-to-date information about recent DACA legislature and how this affects a company’s hiring procedures. Gain an understanding of the various career options available to undocumented students and how the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) has developed specialized programs to support their career development.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Gain a better understanding of the career development process of undocumented students
  2. Learn about DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and recent updates with federal legislature
  3. Understand various career options for undocumented students, with and without DACA
  4. Identify how, as an employer, your organization can hire and support undocumented students
  5. Hear about programs UCSB has developed to provide opportunities for undocumented students to gain career readiness competencies and manage emotional challenges

Maddie Foster has been serving students as a Career Counselor at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) for over two years. In her role, she also focuses on serving undocumented students as a member of the Dream Scholar Resource Team to remain up-to-date on current immigration legislature and collaborate with various campus departments to support these students. Within her time at UCSB, Maddie has transformed a one-day professional development retreat for undocumented students into a year-long career readiness program. Overall, Maddie effectively combines empathy and listening skills with a strong sense of humor supporting students to turn ideas into careers.
